A Field of Rosebay Willowherb
It may be a common weed, but rosebay willowherb is beautiful, whether alive or dead. Near our house there is a hill that is just covered with them and one late afternoon, just before sunset, I spent a long time photographing them.
Now that the bright magenta of their flowers is gone, the muted colours bring out the textures of their opened seedpods. To me even dead plants can have a subtle beauty to them, if you just take a moment and notice it.
I have always liked the English name of this plant, rosebay willowherb, it sounds so lyrical to me. The Finnish name, horsma, doesn’t sound nearly as romantic and mysteriously beautiful.
